Product Description
A dhurrie is a flat-woven rug and probably the earliest form of a carpet with history dating back to around 320 BC where the Arthashastra has references to some floor coverings. The oldest fragments from a dhurrie have been traced to around 100 AD.
Traditionally, dhurries were woven by village women in some parts of North India on basic looms. Shyam Ahuja, who has authored a book on dhurries, writes, "My grandmother and aunt used to weave dhurries. It was fascinating to sit and watch their fingers on the loom as they wove their magic and created wonderful designs." The trend has fizzled out now with only a few womenfolk employed in the art.
The character of a dhurrie lies in the colors and design used. If there is harmony between the two, the result is a masterpiece. Some handicraft hubs in North India have artisans who have taken up dhurrie weaving as a full time employment. A case in point is Mirzapur in UP, from where this masterpiece dhurrie has been sourced.
